"Marriage is a religious institution; the state simply recognizes the union and bestows privileges on those who the laws recognize as married. If you want those same rights, then work on expanding the rights the state bestows on those who enter into a civil union, domestic partnership, whatever you want to call it. The state granted privileges are secular, but the institution of marriage is not. Realize where you have an argument, and where you don’t. Fight for secular privileges; don’t fight to pervert a sacred institution."
